Mistakes Are So Awesone!

I just spent a weekend away making mistakes: I locked myself out of my suitcase and had to go to a hardware store to get something to break into it; I rented a car and, in the process of picking out the one I wanted, left my backpack – that contained everything I work with daily – between 2 cars (discovering that mistake when I reached for my sunglasses. Fortunately it was still there – thank you, car rental people for your honesty and dedication to service); I forgot my sunglasses and car keys at a store after I’d picked up some essentials (again, they were where I’d left them).

In short, I made a lot of mistakes, and continued to do so the entire weekend. When I got back, I called my doctor. She took blood tests and we discovered an issue that may well be contributing to this.

The thing is: if I hadn’t made any mistakes, I very likely would have ignored all the other signs of ill health and carried on. All those mistakes told me in no uncertain terms that I needed to look at what was going on and correct it.

I was reminded through my mistakes that human beings learn by making mistakes. Mistakes are so awesome!

Mistakes are not only natural, they are essential.

The next time you make a mistake, it may be worthwhile to take a moment to figure out what that mistake is trying to tell you.

Doctors make mistakes. Can we talk about this?
