The Words That Shape Your Next Step
I often hear that what I say to another person may impact that person in a good or even a bad way, depending on where they’re at. But what I don’t often hear is that what I say to myself does the exact same thing.
If I’m not sure about what I’m about to do, I might say to myself “You’re really not up to doing this… you need more information … you’re too tired and need to rest”. Or I might say to myself “This is scary but I’m really up for it! Let’s go!”
If I say the first to myself, I won’t do that thing in the near future and, very likely, my near future will totally resemble my near past. If I say the second set of words to myself, I will step into a new world, a new future of my own making.
The only difference that foretells my next step is what I tell myself.
