The Story That Helped Me Say Yes to Change

This week, I was going to write about something quite different. Then I heard from a friend who is struggling with whether to take a chance and move on. You probably know what that feels like – knowing deep down it’s time and dreading doing it anyway, rationalizing many times over why it really is NOT the right time. Like an image of a person hovering in front of a slightly open door with their hand out about to grasp the handle, frozen in time.

I’ve been there in my life, many times. Sometimes, when I chose to walk through, the experience was tough. Sometimes it was wonderful. Every time, though, it was life changing and life enhancing.

But that’s me.

There’s a movie I saw many years ago about a 30-something woman who decided to go to medical school to become a doctor. That may seem like nothing now. When the movie was made, though, it was rare to see someone begin university that late.

In medical school the woman struggled and came very close to giving up. Her mother was a nurse in her 50’s. She told her daughter how she wanted to be a doctor, but kept putting it off because she was “too old”, concluding that now she’s 50 and still a nurse.

That story never left me, and became a rock to support me when I had a tough decision.

If you’re having to make a tough decision, I hope it supports you too!
