Evoking joy from your mind and body.

Trauma therapy, or trauma-focused therapy, include specialized, evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities designed to help individuals process distressing events, reduce symptoms like PTSD, anxiety and flashbacks, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.  It focuses on addressing how trauma affects the mind and body, helping survivors move from feeling stuck to reclaiming their lives. Two therapy methods that I use, either separately or together are EMDR and IFS (often referred to as Parts Work).

EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy, also known as “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy”, is an advanced mind-body approach that was originally introduced by Dr. Francine Shapiro, and is based on the understanding that when your gaze moves back and forth, your mind and subconscious connect with deep emotional experiences. Those experiences are stored in your limbic system and continue to be interpreted as traumatic, unless they are properly addressed.

EMDR therapy allows your subconscious to process these memories and eventually put them in the past, where they belong.

IFS Therapy

IFS, or Internal Family Systems therapy, often referred to as Parts Work, is a compassionate approach developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz that views the mind as composed of various “parts” or sub-personalities that are guided by a core undamaged “self”. This therapeutic method focuses on healing, rather than simply managing emotional wounds by helping clients understand, befriend, and harmonize these internal parts to reduce anxiety, trauma and internal conflict.

The Science Behind EMDR

EMDR therapy focuses on healing from the most primitive parts of your brain, followed by the emotional centres. It focuses on cognitive connection to help you understand your deepest feelings.

While a science-based approach to therapy, it’s also a gentle approach.

Studies show the efficacy of EMDR therapy for treating anxiety, PTSD, pain, and trauma. EMDR therapy is particularly vital for trauma survivors due to the prevalence of subconsciously blocked memories.

EMDR therapy is endorsed by The American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs/Dept. of Defense, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the World Health Organization among many other national and international organizations.
