Spice
I like to produce and watch youtube videos. This time of year I see a lot of dieting commercials on youtube. It may be that some of them have merit, but they really aren’t for me and I regularly skip them. I have my own way of dealing with regulating my diet.
Many of us do. But doing so is really hard for lots of us because of these are uncertain times where so much feels out of our control. One major way of dealing with uncertainty is to find comfort, and eating provides comfort. We picked that up from our first meal.
It goes something like this: we feel uncertain and turn to the familiar comfort of eating. This might eventually make us feel even more out of control. One way to gain at least some modicum of control in our lives is to control our eating. This is sometimes the cause of eating disorders. But, even if controlling what we eat doesn’t lead to an eating disorder, it doesn’t usually work. In fact, it seems to make things worse. At first we feel great: we develop a routine of food preparation and grocery shopping that works for us. Then one day, something happens that breaks the routine. We eat things that aren’t part of the plan, and end up feeling we’ve failed. From that point, things begin to slip, eventually leading to a breakdown in our ability to control our lives at all through our diet.
That’s my story and why I stay well away from any diet commercials or programs. As a result, I don’t weigh what I think I should, but I do feel healthy most of the time. I eat a well balanced diet of all the nutrients I need, with a little added spice.
It’s the spice that makes it work. In fact, I believe it’s the spice in our lives that make everything work: I can totally control the amount of spice I allow.
That makes me feel pretty good!
Quote of the week
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
