Getting Started
This blog is about the problem of procrastination. Even though I’ve written about this topic many times, the harder things get for us, and the more unstable the world around us feels, the more many of us procrastinate. Things simply overtake us and we don’t know where to start. So we don’t start, but instead dive into some distraction that gives us a momentary relief. That relief could be video games, or scrolling, partying, or activities that ultimately hurt us. Many things we turn to are fine if not used to distract, but really get us nowhere otherwise. We end up spinning our wheels and never moving.
Anyone I’ve spoken to about procrastination don’t feel good about it – even though there is that momentary relief, the thing they’re procrastinating about remains in the background, taking up brain space and energy. That’s right, procrastinating is an energy waster.
It’s hard to take action on something that overwhelms us. Other than making it magically go away – which has never worked for me – is to make it less overwhelming.
Here are a few ways:
- Do a bit at a time. Divide the task up into really small chunks, so that you only need to spend about 15 minutes on it every time. 15 minutes isn’t a hard thing for most of us to commit to. If it’s too much for you, try 10 minutes.
- Do it first thing. That way, the task isn’t taking up space and using up energy all day. Besides, it really feels great getting that done for the day.
- Commit to following through. When you find yourself coming up with excuses for missing just this one time, it’s good to remind yourself of that promise.
The key is to find a way to start, then keep going until it’s done. The payoff is how you feel after.
