Find The Dream That Is Truly Yours

I’m talking and writing a lot lately about the possibility of living your dream. But what I haven’t said much about is what that dream is.

I was speaking to someone recently who reminded me that many of the dreams we believe we want are things that society has taught us to want, such as owning our own house, or getting a prestigious job, or even getting married and having children, then later getting that prestigious job.

What if that isn’t really your dream? How would you know? One way is to imagine getting what you believe you want. For instance let’s say we get a new car. It’s great at first, but after we’re used to it, we no longer feel any particular joy about the car, other than it gets us to where we need to go.

What if, instead of focusing on specific goals, we look at what makes us feel moments of joy? It may be small things, and it could also be great things, because what gives us joy – deep spiritual joy – speaks of who we are.

Gloria Steinem died only a few weeks ago. I remember reading her brief autobiography My Life On The Road a number of years ago. It stuck with me because it was one of the few autobiographies I thoroughly enjoyed. In it, I was able to really see the essence of who Gloria Steinem was. Regardless of whether anyone agrees with how she lived and thought, she was one of those rare people who lived her very own dream.

Who are you really? And how can you manifest that in the real world so that you can live a fulfilling, joyful  life?
